Why Choose a HiLook Hard-Wired Alarm System in Melbourne?

If you’re searching for HiLook alarm installation in Melbourne, you’ll quickly find there are a lot of “quick fit” options. We’re not about that. Hard-wired HiLook systems are a solid choice for long-term reliability — especially when the cabling, terminations, and zoning are done properly.

Wired installs, done properly

Wireless has its place, but Melbourne homes with brick, concrete, tight lot lines, and busy RF environments often benefit from a clean wired backbone. When you want stable monitoring and fewer headaches, hard-wired is hard to beat.

We stick to proper cabling practice and licensing requirements. You can read more on ACMA cabling registration and the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

    Tamper-resistant by design

Properly protected cabling and tidy panel terminations make interference and tampering a lot harder. No system is magic — but wired is a strong foundation when you want serious, practical security.

How We Do It

HiLook Alarm Installation Process — Melbourne

Every job we take on follows the same structured process. No guesswork, no shortcuts. Here’s exactly what happens from the moment you book through to the final handover — so you know what to expect before we even show up.

HiLook HA-ALARM-KIT2 — Installed Properly, the First Time

Sipko Security installs HiLook alarm systems across Melbourne with clean cable runs, correct zoning, and a proper user handover. Whether it’s a home in Brighton or a small office in Oakleigh — same standard, every time.

01
Step 1

Site Assessment — We Come to You First

Before a single cable is touched, we visit the property and have a proper look around. We’re checking entry points, wall construction, ceiling cavities, power locations, and any spots that need extra attention — like a double-storey home in Sandringham or a ground-floor retail shop with a back laneway.

A lot of alarm problems we fix in Melbourne trace back to installs done without a real site check. Sensors dropped in the wrong spot, cables run without thinking about serviceability later, zones that don’t match how the building’s actually used. We avoid all of that upfront.

We also talk through your daily routine — how you come and go, whether you have pets, and if you want app access via Hik-Connect. That shapes the final design before we quote you anything. As required by Victoria Police private security licensing, all alarm installation in Victoria must be carried out by a licensed security technician.

  • 🏠 Full property walk-through
  • 📐 Entry point mapping
  • 🐾 Pet consideration
  • 📱 App access planning
02
Step 2

Zoning Plan — Mapping Every Detection Area

Once we’ve walked the site, we draw up a zoning plan. This is where we decide which sensors go where, what each zone covers, and how the system splits up if you want to arm one section of the property while leaving another live — useful if you’re running a home business or have a granny flat out back.

The HiLook AX Hybrid Pro panel supports up to 48 zones, which gives us plenty of room to design a system that fits the actual layout — not just a generic “3 PIRs and done” approach. Zones get labelled properly too, so when a fault shows on the keypad you know exactly which area it’s referring to, not just “Zone 4”.

Good zoning can also matter for insurance claims. The ACCC’s consumer insurance guidance notes that insurers can and do ask for evidence of security measures installed — having a documented zone layout helps with that conversation.

  • 🗺️ Zoning diagram
  • 🔢 Up to 48 zones
  • 🏷️ Clear zone labelling

03
Step 3

Cable Runs — Neat, Hidden, and Done Right

This is where a lot of dodgy installs fall apart. Running cables neatly through a Melbourne home — especially older weatherboard or double-brick properties — takes time and patience. We route through ceiling cavities, wall cavities, and conduit where needed. No cables strapped to skirting boards with cable ties and called done.

All cabling is done to ACMA cabling registration standards, which apply to low-voltage cabling connected to a building’s fixed wiring. We’re registered, and we do it by the book — because shortcuts there can void warranties and cause headaches down the track.

We use quality alarm cable (typically 4-core or 6-core depending on the device) terminated cleanly at both ends. Each run is tested before the next one starts, so we’re not chasing faults at the end of the day with half the system still in the wall.

  • 📡 ACMA-compliant cabling
  • 🧱 Brick & timber routing
  • 🔌 4/6-core alarm cable
  • ✅ Tested per run
04
Step 4

Sensor Placement — Where Detection Actually Matters

Once the cables are in, we mount and wire every sensor. PIR detectors go where they’ll actually catch movement — not just where it’s easy to drill. We’re thinking about detection angles, ceiling height, and where someone would realistically walk if they broke in through your side gate or back window.

Door and window reed switches get fitted to every vulnerable entry point. If your property has sliding doors facing a courtyard, or a side access gate that opens onto a narrow walkway — those spots get covered. We also factor in the Australian Building Codes Board’s guidance on residential security when assessing what’s worth covering versus what’s overkill for your specific property type.

Pet owners don’t get forgotten either. HiLook’s PIR sensors support pet-immune modes, and we position them high enough to avoid false triggers from animals under a certain weight — so your alarm actually works when you’re out, rather than going off every time the dog walks past.

  • 👁️ PIR angle optimisation
  • 🚪 Door & window reeds
  • 🐕 Pet-immune positioning
  • 🔒 All entry points covered
05
Step 5

Commissioning — Programming, Testing, and Making It Work

This is the part most installation companies rush. We don’t. Once everything’s physically mounted and wired, we sit down at the panel and program it properly — zone names, arming delays, output mappings, and siren behaviour. The system gets configured to how you actually live, not a factory default that nobody bothered to change.

Every zone is then walk-tested individually. We set off each PIR and each reed switch, confirm the correct zone registers, and check the panel responds the way it should. Siren output is tested too — indoor buzzer, outdoor siren, strobe function. The app connection gets set up and verified on your phone before we pack up tools.

Australia’s Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends securing any networked device on your home network with a strong, unique password — we set that up on the HiLook IP module as part of commissioning so you’re not left with default credentials sitting open on your local network.

  • ⚙️ Full panel programming
  • 🧪 Zone-by-zone walk test
  • 📲 Hik-Connect app setup
  • 🔐 Secure credentials set
06
Step 6

Handover — You Know Your System Before We Leave

We don’t dump a manual on the bench and head off. We take you through the whole system — how to arm and disarm, how to use the keypad, what the different alert tones mean, how to check the app, and what to do if something triggers when you don’t expect it. If there are other people in the house who’ll be using it, we’d rather they’re there for the walkthrough too.

You’ll also get written zone labels and basic operating notes. If something comes up in the first few weeks — a zone fault you’re unsure about, or a question about changing the arming delay — give us a ring. We’re based in Brighton and service Melbourne broadly, so a follow-up visit if genuinely needed isn’t a drama.

Once handed over, your HiLook alarm system is registered to your property. According to Consumer Affairs Victoria’s warranty guidance, products installed as part of a service come with both manufacturer and statutory guarantees — we’ll make sure you know what applies to your gear.

By Property Type

Best HiLook Alarm Setup for Melbourne Homes

Not every Melbourne property needs the same alarm layout. A single-storey weatherboard in Bentleigh has completely different coverage challenges to a double-storey townhouse in Richmond or a period home in Hawthorn. Here’s how we approach each one.

Single-Storey

Single-Storey Home — Straightforward Coverage, Done Well

Single-storey homes are the bread and butter of most Melbourne alarm installs. With everything on one level, cable routing is usually cleaner — but that doesn’t mean any shortcut-merchant install will do. Proper coverage means every door and window that faces a boundary, plus internal PIRs that cover the main movement paths through the house, not just the hallway.

A typical single-storey install from us runs 6–10 zones depending on the size and how many bedrooms split off the main hallway. Victoria’s home safety guidelines consistently flag front and side entries as primary access points — we always make sure those are reed-switched first.

  • Front door + back door reed switches
  • All accessible windows on boundary-facing walls
  • 2–3 PIRs covering main hallway, lounge, and kitchen path
  • Outdoor siren mounted high on front or side elevation
  • Panel in laundry or hallway cupboard

Double-Storey

Double-Storey Home — Upstairs Needs Covering Too

Double-storey homes in Melbourne get under-alarmed more than any other property type. Most quick installs throw a couple of PIRs downstairs and call it done — which leaves the upper floor completely open. If you’ve got a balcony, second-floor window access from a pergola or fence line, or a laundry chute between floors, you need more thought put in.

We split these installs into two arming partitions: downstairs armed at night, full system armed when you leave. The Victoria Police residential security advice specifically calls out upper-floor entry as an underestimated risk for Melbourne homes near trees or boundary structures. We take that seriously.

  • Ground floor perimeter — all doors and accessible windows
  • Upper-level balcony door + any window above climbable structure
  • Staircase PIR (catches movement between floors at night)
  • Separate upstairs hallway PIR for bedroom wing
  • Two-partition programming for night-arm flexibility

Townhouse

Townhouse — Shared Walls, Private Security

Townhouses in Melbourne present a unique challenge: you share walls, but you’re still responsible for your own security perimeter. The ground-floor entry, any internal garage access (very common in newer Bentleigh and Clayton townhouses), and rear courtyard sliding doors are the spots we pay most attention to.

Cabling in townhouses can be trickier than a freestanding home — especially if the build uses a lot of concrete slab and steel framing. We plan cable paths early so we’re not left fishing through cavities that weren’t designed with serviceable cabling in mind. According to Consumer Affairs Victoria’s minimum rental standards, even owner-occupied townhouses benefit from documenting installed security for any future tenancy.

  • Front door + internal garage-to-home entry door
  • Ground-floor rear sliding door or courtyard access
  • PIR in ground-floor open plan area
  • Upper-level landing PIR if two-storey
  • Siren on front elevation (check body corporate rules first)

Period / Heritage Home

Period Home — Protecting History Without Wrecking It

Edwardian and Victorian homes across Melbourne’s inner suburbs — Hawthorn, Fitzroy, Northcote, Prahran — need a careful approach. Exposed cornices, lathe-and-plaster walls, and heritage overlays mean you can’t always chase cables the same way you would in a modern build. We’ve done enough of these to know which paths work and which ones don’t.

Older homes typically have more entry points too — side gates, sash windows, back verandah doors that get overlooked. Heritage Victoria’s permits and approvals framework may apply to any external fixings on a registered property, so we check that before drilling anything on the facade.

  • Front door, back door, and any side-passage gate entry
  • Sash and casement windows on ground floor perimeter
  • Concealed cable routes through roof space where possible
  • Surface conduit only where heritage fabric needs protecting
  • Discreet siren placement — back of property where practical

Tenant-friendly setup — easy handover
Rental Property

Rental Property — Simple to Use, Simple to Hand Over

If you’re a landlord installing a HiLook alarm system into a Melbourne rental, the main goal is a system that tenants can actually use without calling you every week. That means simple keypad operation, clear zone labels, and programming that’s forgiving of people who don’t know alarm systems. RFID tags are a good option for rentals — tenants can disarm without punching in a code, and tags are easy to issue and deactivate when someone moves out.

Victoria’s rental minimum standards, updated through the Residential Tenancies (Minimum Standards) Regulations 2018, don’t currently mandate alarms — but insurers increasingly ask whether a property has documented security when processing landlord insurance claims. A professionally installed and documented HiLook system strengthens that position.

We also keep the panel programming accessible for you as the owner — you hold the installer code separately so you can make changes between tenancies without needing to call us out every time someone moves on.

  • Front and rear entry doors — reed switches standard
  • Main living area PIR — pet-immune if applicable
  • Simple LCD keypad in entry area, RFID tag option
  • Separate owner installer code kept by landlord
  • Written handover notes prepared for each new tenancy
A note on licensing: All alarm installation work in Victoria must be carried out by a licensed technician under the Private Security Act 2004 (Vic). Sipko Security holds the required licence and carries full public liability insurance. If your installer can’t show you both, that’s worth asking about before they start drilling holes in your walls.

HiLook Alarm + CCTV Integration via Hik-Connect

One of the best things about installing a HiLook alarm system in Melbourne is how cleanly it talks to HiLook (and Hikvision) cameras through a single app — Hik-Connect. You get alarm events, camera live view, and system status all in the same place, on your phone, wherever you are. We set it up properly as part of every install so it actually works when you need it.

One App — Alarm and Camera in the Same View

Hik-Connect pulls your HiLook alarm panel and any connected HiLook cameras into a single app. You arm and disarm the system, check live camera feeds, and review event history without jumping between different apps or logging into separate platforms. For Melbourne homeowners who want to keep things simple — this is it.

🔔

Alarm Events That Actually Tell You Something

When a zone triggers — a door opened, a PIR fired, the siren went off — Hik-Connect sends you a push notification with the zone name, not just a generic “alarm alert.” If you’ve got cameras covering that area, you can jump straight to the live view or recorded clip to see what’s happening before you decide what to do next.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends keeping connected devices on separate network segments where possible — we can advise on how to set that up with your router during the install.

📷

Camera Verification — See Before You React

A siren going off at 2 AM could be a real break-in, a possum on the roof, or a sensor that’s been nudged. With camera integration through Hik-Connect, you can pull up a live feed or the last recorded event clip and actually look before you call us or the police. That ability to verify — rather than just react — is worth a lot of peace of mind.

🔒

Arm and Disarm Remotely — Useful When You Forget

Left the house and not sure if you armed it? Hik-Connect lets you check the system status and arm it remotely, from anywhere with a phone signal. You can also disarm for a tradie or family member who needs access without giving out your code — then re-arm once they’ve left. It’s the kind of everyday convenience that makes people actually use their alarm system properly.

🏠

Works With Your Existing HiLook CCTV Setup

Already got HiLook or Hikvision cameras installed? In most cases they’ll pair directly with the alarm panel through the same Hik-Connect account, with no extra hardware needed. If you’re starting from scratch, we can spec a combined alarm-and-camera package for your Melbourne property from the ground up — one install visit, one app, done.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has guidance on where cameras can and can’t be placed on private property — we make sure every camera position we recommend sits within those guidelines.

🛡️

Secure Credentials — Not Just Default Password Set and Forgotten

A connected alarm system is only as secure as the account protecting it. We set up your Hik-Connect account with a strong unique password and enable two-step verification before we hand over. We also make sure the HiLook panel’s network module isn’t sitting on default credentials — which, unfortunately, a lot of quick installs leave exactly as they come from the box.

This matters. The ASD’s Essential Eight cybersecurity framework lists patching and restricting admin access as core controls — the same principles apply to networked security devices at home.

How We Set It Up — Included in Every HiLook Install

1

Panel network connection

We connect the HiLook panel’s built-in IP module to your home network via a wired ethernet cable where possible — more reliable than Wi-Fi for a security device.

2

Hik-Connect account setup

We create or link your Hik-Connect account, set a strong unique password, and enable two-step verification before anything gets added to it.

3

Device registration + camera pairing

The alarm panel gets added to your account, then any HiLook cameras get paired to the same account so everything shows up in one view.

4

Live test + your walkthrough

We trigger a test event so you can see exactly what the notification looks like on your phone, then walk you through the app before we leave.

Want alarm + CCTV set up together in Melbourne?

We can spec a combined HiLook alarm and camera system for your property — one visit, one app, properly configured. Call us or fill in the form above and we’ll put together a quote.

Where Sensors Actually Go

Sensor Placement Plan for a Proper HiLook Install

Most alarm problems in Melbourne homes aren’t about the hardware — they’re about where the sensors ended up. Put a PIR in the wrong corner and it’ll either miss 40% of the room or spend its life picking up the cat. Put a door reed on a hollow-core back door and it’ll rattle loose inside twelve months. Placement matters as much as the kit itself.

This is how we think about sensor layout on a real Melbourne HiLook alarm installation — not “sensors everywhere,” but sensors in the right places for the right reasons.

According to Victoria Police’s residential security advice, most residential break-ins in Victoria involve entry through doors and ground-floor windows — which directly shapes where we prioritise sensor coverage first.

Typical sensor count — Melbourne home

📡
2–4 PIR motion detectors Hallway, open plan, staircase (if double-storey)
🚪
3–6 door reed switches Front, rear, side access, internal garage door
🪟
2–8 window reed switches Ground floor boundary-facing windows
📢
1–2 sirens Indoor + outdoor, mounted high on elevation
Sensor types: 📡 PIR Motion Detector 🚪 Door Reed Switch 🪟 Window Reed Switch 📢 Siren / Sounder
🚶
📡 PIR

Main Hallway

The hallway is the single most valuable PIR location in a Melbourne home. Anyone who enters through a door or window has to move through or near the hallway to reach bedrooms, living areas, or anything worth stealing. A correctly positioned PIR here — high corner, angled across the corridor width — covers all that movement with a single zone.

Mount height matters: we aim for 2.1–2.4m on a corner, angled roughly 45° down and across the corridor. Lower than that and the detection angle shrinks; too high and narrow hallways create blind spots.

⚠️ Common Mistake Mounting the PIR flat against the wall at the end of the hallway, pointing straight down the corridor. This gives you a narrow “corridor beam” that misses anyone moving from a side room — you need the cross-corridor angle.
🛋️
📡 PIR

Open Plan Living / Kitchen

Melbourne’s open-plan layouts — kitchen, dining, and lounge all flowing together — are great for living but tricky for sensor coverage. A standard PIR has roughly a 110° field of view at 2.1m height, which means one sensor can cover a rectangular room up to about 12x8m if placed in the correct corner.

If the space is L-shaped or has a kitchen island breaking the sightline, a second PIR may be needed. We’d rather add one zone than leave a dead corner that an intruder can use to move through the house undetected.

⚠️ Common Mistake Pointing the PIR directly at large windows or glass doors. In Melbourne’s sunny conditions, radiant heat through glass can trigger passive infrared sensors — especially in summer afternoons. Angle away from direct sunlight paths.
🚪
🚪 Door Reed

Front Door

The front door reed switch is typically zone 1 on every Melbourne HiLook install we do — and for good reason. Even if every other sensor is bypassed, the front door contact is the last line of detection before someone is inside. The magnet sits on the door leaf, the switch body on the frame, with a 10–15mm gap between them when closed.

For hinged timber doors, we recess the switch into the frame where possible for a clean finish. Solid-core doors are ideal; hollow-core doors can flex enough in Melbourne’s temperature swings to cause intermittent faults if the gap isn’t set right.

⚠️ Common Mistake Surface-mounting a reed switch on the visible face of the door frame with exposed cabling. Apart from looking untidy, it’s easier to defeat and creates a weak point. Recessed or concealed mounting is always preferable.
🏡
🚪 Door Reed

Rear Door & Sliding Glass Doors

Rear access is the preferred entry point for most residential break-ins in Melbourne — it’s less visible from the street and more often left unsecured. If your back door is a sliding glass panel (common in Bayside and inner-southeast properties), a standard door reed works fine on the sliding frame, but make sure the magnet placement accounts for any lateral float in the sliding mechanism.

Double-leaf sliding doors need two reed switches — one per panel — if both sides can be independently opened. Victoria Police’s security advice consistently flags rear sliding doors as a common bypass point in residential burglaries.

⚠️ Common Mistake Only fitting a reed to one panel of a double-sliding door setup. If both panels can be moved, one unmonitored panel becomes an easy way in that the alarm won’t see.
🪟
🪟 Window Reed

Ground Floor Windows

Windows are often seen as “extra” coverage, but they shouldn’t be. A window reed switch triggers the alarm the moment the window is pried open — before an intruder even steps foot inside. We prioritise windows that face side fences or back gardens where someone has time to work without being seen from the street.

We use slimline magnets for Melbourne’s popular aluminium sliding windows or timber sash windows. They don’t interfere with the window’s operation and are almost invisible when the window is closed.

⚠️ Common Mistake Forgetting to account for windows left on “vent” or “night latch” positions. If the magnet isn’t positioned specifically to allow for this, the alarm won’t arm while the window is slightly open for airflow.
📢
📢 External Siren

High Elevation Facade

The external siren (or “Strobe/Bell”) serves two purposes: it makes a massive noise to scare people off, and the flashing strobe tells the neighbours (and the police) exactly which house is having the drama. We mount these as high as possible on the front or side elevation of your Melbourne property.

Placement is key for deterrence. If an opportunistic burglar sees a professional HiLook siren mounted properly, they’re much more likely to keep walking to the next house that looks like an easier target.

⚠️ Common Mistake Mounting the siren in a spot where it can be reached with a standard step-ladder or from a porch roof. It needs to be high enough that tampering requires a full extension ladder.

Got Questions?

HiLook Alarm Installation FAQs

Is HiLook owned by Hikvision?

Yes, HiLook is a brand by Hikvision designed specifically to offer professional-grade security at a more accessible price point. It uses the same core technology and the same Hik-Connect app, making it a highly reliable choice for Melbourne residential installs without the “enterprise” price tag.

Can I add cameras to my HiLook alarm later?

Absolutely. One of the best things about the HiLook ecosystem is that cameras and alarms live in the same app. If you start with a HiLook alarm installation today, you can easily integrate HiLook or Hikvision CCTV cameras down the track. We’ll make sure your initial setup is ready for expansion.

How long does a typical installation take?

A standard 3-bedroom, single-storey Melbourne home usually takes about 4 to 6 hours for a clean, hard-wired installation. This includes running cables, mounting hardware, programming the panel, and walking you through the app. Double-storey homes can take a full day depending on the complexity of the cable runs.

Do I need a monthly subscription?

No. Unlike some “DIY” systems that lock features behind a monthly paywall, HiLook doesn’t require a subscription for self-monitoring via the app. You get push notifications, live views, and system control for free. If you want professional 24/7 monitoring, that’s an optional extra we can arrange.

Will my cat set off the alarm?

Not if it’s set up right. We use pet-immune PIR sensors that are designed to ignore movement from animals up to a certain weight (usually around 20-25kg). During the site check, we’ll ask about your pets and place sensors to avoid areas where they might jump onto furniture and cause a false trigger.

Is the HiLook AX Hybrid Pro system secure?

It’s very secure. It uses professional encryption for all communications and doesn’t rely on easily jammed wireless signals for its core sensors. We also follow Australian Cyber Security Centre guidance to ensure your app connection is locked down properly.
