Why Your Melbourne Home Needs a Proper Intercom — Not Just a Doorbell
A smart doorbell is a convenience device. A home intercom system is security infrastructure. The difference matters — especially for Melbourne homes where the front door is the primary entry point for both residents and intruders.
The key difference: A smart doorbell can’t release an electric strike, integrate with a gate motor, or function without cloud connectivity. A proper intercom system does all three — and is designed for long-term, permanent installation rather than consumer replacement cycles.
We Specialise in Home Intercom Systems — Audio, Video, App & Gate
SIPKO Security installs and repairs every type of home intercom system across Melbourne — from a simple audio buzzer on a terrace in Fitzroy to a full video + gate + app system on an acreage in Mornington Peninsula. We’re brand-agnostic, fixed-price, and we test your existing cabling before recommending anything.
- ✓All system types — audio, video, app-based (SIP), wireless, gate intercoms, and multi-entry systems for any Melbourne home.
- ✓All brands serviced — Aiphone, Akuvox, 2N, BPT, Comelit, Urmet, Fermax, and Hikvision. We repair systems we didn’t install.
- ✓Cable assessment first — we always test your existing 2-wire or 4-wire cabling before recommending a full rewire. Most Melbourne homes can reuse what’s already there.

- ✓Same-day emergency response — for complete intercom failures, we respond same-day for calls received before 10am on business days.
What Is a Home Intercom System — and Which Type Do You Actually Need?
A home intercom is the communication link between your front door (or gate) and the inside of your home. But “intercom” covers six very different technologies — covering a wide range of budgets and home types. The right choice depends on your home, your lifestyle, and your existing cabling.
Every system does these 3 things:
- ✓Alerts you when a visitor arrives at your entry point — door, gate, or driveway
- ✓Lets you communicate with the visitor before deciding to open the door
- ✓Releases the door or gate electronically — no need to physically go to the entry
- ✓Re-locks automatically after a set timer — no manual action required
Two-way voice only. Visitor presses a button, your handset rings, you speak and press door release. No screen, no app, no internet. Most reliable and lowest cost. Common in Melbourne homes built before 2010.
Same as audio but your indoor monitor shows a live colour camera feed of the visitor. Night vision standard. You see who’s there before opening. Most popular upgrade for Melbourne homes.
Visitor calls go to your smartphone anywhere in the world. Live video, two-way audio, remote door release — all from your phone. No indoor handset required. Requires stable NBN or 4G at the entry panel.
Entry panel and indoor unit communicate via RF or WiFi — no cabling between them. Ideal for heritage homes, rentals, or situations where running cable through walls is impractical.
Entry panel at your driveway gate or front fence. Connects to your automatic gate motor — residents open the gate from their handset or phone. Essential for acreage, corner blocks, and homes with electric gates.
Already have an old buzzer? In most Melbourne homes, existing 2-wire or 4-wire cabling can be reused with a modern video or app-based system — no rewiring required. We test your cables first.
How a Home Intercom System Works — Step by Step
Understanding the signal path from visitor press to door release helps you choose the right system and troubleshoot faults when they occur.
1 — Visitor presses the entry panel
The panel at your front door, gate, or driveway sends a call signal — through your home’s cabling (wired) or over your internet connection (app-based).
2 — Your indoor unit or phone rings
Audio system: handset rings. Video system: monitor shows live camera feed. App-based: smartphone push notification with video. All happen within 1–3 seconds of the button press.
3 — You speak to the visitor
Two-way audio lets you verify who is at the door before deciding to grant access. On video systems, you also see them. On app-based, you can do this from anywhere in the world.
4 — You press the door release button
A signal goes to the electric strike or magnetic lock on your door or gate, releasing it for a set number of seconds — typically 5–10, configurable during installation.
5 — The door automatically re-locks
After the release timer expires, the lock re-engages automatically. No manual action required. The system is immediately ready for the next visitor call.
6 — Event is logged (IP systems)
On app-based and IP systems, every call and door release is timestamped and stored. You can review who came to the door while you were out — even if you didn’t answer.
Wired vs App-Based: The Key Difference
Both work well — but they suit different homes and lifestyles.
- Wired: reliable, no internet dependency, must be home to answer
- App-based: answer from anywhere, requires stable NBN + 4G backup
- Wired: lower ongoing cost, no subscription fees
- App-based: no indoor handset needed, easier to install in retrofits
- Both: same door release hardware, same electric strike or mag lock
What Happens During a Power Outage?
Most intercoms require mains power. We recommend a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for the entry panel and door release hardware — particularly important for homes with elderly residents or electric gates that must remain operable during blackouts.
- Electric strike (fail-secure): stays locked during power failure
- Magnetic lock (fail-safe): releases during power failure — required on fire egress doors
- UPS backup: maintains intercom function for 4–8 hours during outage
Audio-Only Home Intercom Systems
Still the most common intercom type in Melbourne homes built before 2010 — and still the right choice for many properties today. Simple, reliable, and significantly cheaper than video.
- Budget: You need a working intercom without the cost of video hardware. Audio systems are 40–60% cheaper than equivalent video systems.
- Reliability: Fewer components means fewer failure points. Audio systems have a longer service life and lower maintenance cost than video systems.
- Rental properties: Tenants don’t need video — they need something that works. Audio systems are more durable and easier to repair between tenancies.
- Heritage homes: Minimal hardware footprint. A slim audio panel suits heritage facades better than a large video panel with camera housing.
- Existing cabling: If your home already has 2-wire or 4-wire intercom cabling, an audio replacement is the lowest-cost option that reuses what’s already there.
- Upgrade path: Most audio systems use cabling that’s compatible with modern video and app-based systems — so you’re not locked in. Upgrade later without rewiring.
Video Home Intercom Systems
See who’s at your door before you open it — in full colour, day or night, from any room in the house. The most popular intercom upgrade for Melbourne homes, and the single biggest security improvement you can make to your entry.
Live Colour Camera Feed
See the visitor’s face on your indoor monitor before deciding to open the door — day or night.
Multiple Indoor Monitors
Add screens in the kitchen, bedroom, and study — all ring simultaneously when a visitor calls.
Snapshot & Call History
Premium monitors store a photo of every visitor call — even when you don’t answer.
Reuse Existing Cabling
Most Melbourne homes can upgrade to video using existing 2-wire or 4-wire cabling — no wall chasing.
Door Release Integration
Electric strike or magnetic lock connected to the monitor — release the door with one button press.
Brands We Install
Aiphone, Akuvox, BPT, Comelit, Fermax, Hikvision — all with 12-month workmanship warranty.
App-Based Home Intercom Systems
Modern SIP and cloud-based intercoms let you answer your front door from your smartphone — whether you’re in the kitchen, at work, or overseas. No indoor handset required. The visitor presses the panel, your phone rings with live video.
- Push notification to your phone — live video call the moment a visitor presses your entry panel, with two-way audio and remote door release.
- No indoor handset needed — eliminates the cost of running cable to each room. Your smartphone is the handset.
- Multiple users per home — both partners receive the call simultaneously. Each person manages their own app account.
- Temporary access codes — issue time-limited PINs for tradespeople, cleaners, or guests without giving out a physical key.
- 4G backup recommended — if your NBN drops, the system automatically switches to 4G to maintain intercom function.
Akuvox R Series
Popular app-based brand with reliable SIP performance. SmartPlus app, HD video. Strong value for Melbourne homes.
Aiphone IX Series
Enterprise-grade IP with native iOS/Android app. Preferred for larger homes and prestige properties.
2N Helios IP
European engineering, outstanding vandal resistance. Ideal for exposed entry panels in Melbourne’s inner suburbs.
4G Backup Router
We install a 4G failover router at the entry panel — intercom stays online even when NBN drops.
Wireless Home Intercom Systems
No cabling between the entry panel and indoor unit — ideal for heritage homes, rentals, and retrofits where running cable through walls is impractical or too costly.
RF Wireless Systems
Entry panel and indoor handset communicate via 433MHz or 868MHz radio frequency. Range up to 200m. No WiFi or internet required. Battery or mains powered.
WiFi / App-Based
Entry panel connects to your home WiFi. Calls go to your smartphone. No indoor unit required. Requires stable WiFi at the entry panel location.
Best For
Heritage homes with no existing cabling, rental properties, granny flats, secondary entries, and situations where a licensed electrician can’t run cable through walls.
Limitations to Know
RF range can be affected by thick walls and metal structures. WiFi systems depend on internet uptime. Battery-powered panels need regular battery replacement.
Gate Intercom Systems for Melbourne Homes
An entry panel at your driveway gate or front fence lets visitors call the house before the gate opens. The intercom connects directly to your automatic gate motor — residents open the gate from their handset, monitor, or phone app.
Driveway Gate Integration
The intercom door release output connects to your gate motor controller — open the gate from your handset or phone without a separate remote.
Weatherproof Entry Panels
Gate panels are exposed to Melbourne’s weather year-round. We install IP65-rated panels rated for rain, dust, and UV — not standard indoor panels.
Long-Range Wireless Options
For acreage and large properties where running cable from the gate to the house is impractical, we install long-range RF or 4G-connected gate panels.
Keypad + Intercom Combo
Residents enter a PIN to open the gate without using the intercom at all. Visitors still call through. One panel handles both functions.
App-Based Gate Release
Open your gate from your smartphone — from the couch, from work, or from overseas. Ideal for homes where residents frequently arrive at different times.
Gate Intercom Checklist
What we assess before recommending a gate intercom system for your Melbourne home.
- Distance from gate to house (cable vs wireless)
- Existing gate motor brand and compatibility
- Power availability at the gate location
- Weather exposure and vandal risk
- Number of residents and access requirements
- Internet availability at gate (for app-based)
Wired vs Wireless Home Intercom
Both work well — but they suit different homes and different situations. Here’s an honest comparison to help you choose.
Wired Intercom
- ✓Most reliable — no interference, no battery dependency, no internet required
- ✓Lower long-term cost — no batteries to replace, no subscription fees
- ✓Better audio quality — dedicated cable means cleaner signal than RF or WiFi
- ✓Longer lifespan — wired systems are designed for permanent installation with minimal moving parts, unlike battery-powered consumer devices

Video Intercom vs Smart Doorbell — What’s the Actual Difference?
Ring, Nest, and Eufy doorbells are popular — but they’re not intercoms. Here’s an honest comparison of what each system actually delivers for a Melbourne home.
Smart doorbells are consumer devices designed for convenience. Video intercoms are security infrastructure designed for reliability, longevity, and proper door release integration.
Our Honest Take
If you rent and want a quick, no-install solution — a smart doorbell is fine. If you own your home and want a system designed for permanent installation, that integrates with a proper electric strike, and doesn’t depend on a cloud subscription — a video intercom is the right choice.

Intercom Systems for New Home Builds
Working with your builder during construction is the most cost-effective way to get a high-quality intercom system. Pre-wiring during the rough-in stage eliminates the need for disruptive cable runs after you move in.
Design Consultation
We work with your architect and builder to specify cable routes, conduit sizes, and equipment locations before walls are closed.
Pre-Wire Stage
We install all cabling, conduit, and back-boxes during rough-in — before plastering. Significantly cheaper than running cables through finished walls.
Equipment Install
After fit-out, we install the entry panel, indoor monitors or app configuration, door release hardware, and any gate integration.
Commissioning
We test every entry point, configure the app, and hand over full documentation — as-built drawings, warranties, and user guides.
Upgrading an Existing Home Intercom
Already have an old audio buzzer? In most Melbourne homes, existing cabling can be reused with a modern video or app-based system — avoiding the cost and disruption of full rewiring.
- Cable Test: We test continuity, insulation resistance, and signal quality on all existing cables before recommending a system.
- System Selection: Based on cable type and condition, we recommend the best system that maximises new features while minimising installation cost.
- Adaptor Installation: Where existing 2-wire or 4-wire cable is reusable, we install a bus converter to make it compatible with modern IP systems.
- Panel & Hardware: New entry panel, door release hardware, and indoor monitors or app configuration — installed in a single visit for most homes.
- Testing & Handover: Every function tested before we leave. You receive a completion report, warranty documentation, and user guide.
Door Release & Electric Strike Integration
The intercom is only half the system — the door release hardware is equally critical. We supply and install the correct lock type for every entry point in your home.
Electric Strike (Fail-Secure)
The most common door release for Melbourne homes. Stays locked during a power failure — preferred for front doors. Activated by a brief voltage pulse from the intercom. Suits timber and aluminium door frames.
Magnetic Lock (Fail-Safe)
Required on fire egress doors under Victorian building codes. Releases when power is cut — allowing free exit during a fire or power failure. Requires a continuous power supply and door position sensor.
Release Timer Configuration
We configure the door release timer to match your home — typically 5–10 seconds. Too short and you can’t reach the door in time; too long and the door stays open for tailgating. We test with you present.
Power Supply & UPS
Door release hardware requires a dedicated 12V or 24V DC power supply. We install a correctly rated PSU with battery backup (UPS) to maintain door release function during power outages.
Door Position Sensor
A reed switch tells the intercom whether the door is open or closed — preventing the lock from re-engaging while the door is still open, and enabling remote door status monitoring on IP systems.
Fault Diagnosis & Repair
Door release failures are one of the most common intercom faults we attend. We carry replacement electric strikes, magnetic locks, and power supplies on our service vehicles — most faults resolved same visit.
All door release hardware on fire egress paths must comply with AS 1428 (accessibility) and the NCC. Magnetic locks on fire doors must release automatically on alarm activation. We ensure all installations are compliant and provide documentation for building certifiers.

Home Intercom + Smart Home Integration
Modern app-based intercoms integrate with your smart home platform — letting your front door become part of your home automation, not a separate system you have to manage separately.
- Trigger automations on door open — turn on entry lights, unlock internal doors, or send a notification when the front door is released.
- Voice assistant integration — “Hey Google, open the front door” or “Alexa, who’s at the door?” on compatible systems.
- AJAX alarm integration — intercom and alarm system share the same app. Arm/disarm the alarm when you open the front door automatically.
- CCTV integration — intercom call triggers a recording clip on your NVR, making it easy to find relevant footage without reviewing hours of continuous recording.
🏠 Google Home / Nest
Akuvox and 2N systems support Google Home integration via SIP. View the door camera on your Nest Hub display and release the door with a voice command.
🍎 Apple HomeKit
Select Akuvox models support HomeKit via a SIP bridge. View the door camera in the Home app and trigger automations based on door release events.
🔒 AJAX Alarm System
We integrate Akuvox intercoms with AJAX alarm systems — one app for both. Visitor calls appear alongside alarm events in a single notification feed.
📹 CCTV / NVR
Intercom-triggered recording on Hikvision and Dahua NVRs — every door release event saves a timestamped clip automatically, without continuous recording.
Home Intercom System Cost Guide — Melbourne 2026
Pricing varies significantly based on system type, home size, and whether existing cabling can be reused. Here’s a realistic guide to help you budget accurately.
| System Type | Home Type | Estimated Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio-only replacement | Single entry, existing cable | $300–$600 | Reusing existing 2-wire cabling |
| Video intercom (new install) | House, single entry | $800–$1,800 | Includes new cabling if required |
| App-based IP system | House, no indoor monitor | $600–$1,400 | No indoor monitors required |
| Video + monitors (2 rooms) | House, 2 indoor monitors | $1,200–$2,500 | Colour monitors in 2 rooms |
| Gate intercom + motor integration | House with electric gate | $1,500–$3,500 | Weatherproof panel + gate controller |
| Multi-entry (front + gate) | House, 2 entry points | $2,000–$4,500 | Unified system, single app |
| Single fault repair | Any | $150–$450 | Most faults resolved in one visit |
📐 Existing Cabling
Reusing existing 2-wire or 4-wire cabling saves $300–$1,500 on a typical Melbourne home. We always test cables before recommending a full rewire.
🚪 Number of Entry Points
Each additional entry point (gate, side door) adds $600–$1,800 depending on distance from the main system and door release hardware required.
📱 App vs Monitor
App-based systems (no indoor monitors) are typically 30–40% cheaper than video monitor systems for the same home — no per-room hardware cost.
🏗️ Heritage & Access
Heritage homes or difficult cable access may incur additional labour. We identify these factors during the site assessment and include them in the quote.
Intercom Systems for Acreage & Large Melbourne Properties
Standard intercom systems are designed for suburban homes with a 20–30m cable run from gate to house. Acreage properties need a different approach — longer cable runs, weatherproof hardware, and often wireless or 4G-connected solutions.
- Long-range wireless panels — RF systems with 200–500m range for properties where running cable from the gate to the house is impractical.
- 4G-connected gate panels — the entry panel uses a 4G SIM card to call your smartphone directly, with no cable run required at all.
- Solar-powered panels — for remote gates with no mains power, we install solar-powered entry panels with battery backup.
- Multiple entry points — front gate, side gate, shed, and stable entries all on one unified system with a single app.
- Weatherproof hardware — IP65-rated panels rated for rain, dust, UV, and temperature extremes common in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
Common Acreage Scenarios We Solve
Gate 200m from House
4G-connected panel at the gate calls your smartphone. No cable run required. Works anywhere with mobile coverage.
No Power at Gate
Solar panel + battery backup powers the entry panel. Fully self-contained — no mains power required at the gate location.
Multiple Farm Gates
Each gate has its own panel. All calls go to the same smartphone app. Open any gate remotely from anywhere.
Granny Flat + Main House
Separate intercom systems for each dwelling, or a shared system where both households can answer the front gate.
Intercom Systems for Townhouses & Duplexes
Townhouses and duplexes have unique intercom challenges — shared entries, individual handsets per dwelling, and the question of who controls the door release. Here’s how we handle each scenario.
Shared Entry, Individual Handsets
One lobby panel at the shared entry. Each dwelling has its own handset or monitor. Visitor selects which unit to call. Each resident controls their own door release independently.
Separate Entries Per Dwelling
Each dwelling has its own entry panel and handset — completely independent systems. Visitors call only the relevant unit. No shared hardware, no shared management.
App-Based for Renters
Tenants use the smartphone app — no indoor handset to install or remove between tenancies. Landlord manages app accounts remotely. No physical hardware in the apartment.
Shared Gate + Individual Entries
A shared gate panel at the street, plus individual entry panels at each front door. Residents open the shared gate and their own door from a single app or handset.
Home Intercom for Elderly & Accessible Homes
For elderly residents and homes with accessibility requirements, the right intercom system can significantly improve safety, independence, and peace of mind — for both the resident and their family.
- ✓Large button entry panels — oversized buttons with high-contrast labelling for residents with limited dexterity or vision impairment.
- ✓Hearing loop (telecoil) integration — audio induction loop for residents with hearing aids, delivering intercom audio directly through their hearing device.
- ✓UPS battery backup — maintains intercom and door release function during power outages, critical for residents who cannot use stairs or alternative exits.
- ✓Carer access management — individual fobs or PINs for each carer and support worker, with full entry log for family review.
- ✓Family remote monitoring — family members can receive a notification when the front door is opened, providing passive safety monitoring without intrusion.
- ✓AS 1428 compliance — panel height, button size, and audio levels meeting Australian accessibility standards.
Designed for Every Resident
We design intercom systems that work for every resident in the home — regardless of age, mobility, or hearing ability. No resident should be unable to answer their own front door.
Intercom Systems for Rental & Investment Properties
Landlords and property managers have different priorities to owner-occupiers. Here’s what we recommend for rental properties — and why.
What Landlords Need
A system that’s durable, easy to manage between tenancies, and doesn’t require a locksmith every time a tenant changes.
- ✓App-based system — no indoor handset to install or remove. Tenant downloads the app, landlord adds their account. When they leave, account is removed remotely.
- ✓PIN code access — issue a unique PIN to each tenant. Change it between tenancies without replacing hardware.
- ✓Remote management — landlord can add/remove tenant accounts, issue temporary PINs for tradespeople, and view entry logs from anywhere.
- ✓Durable hardware — we recommend vandal-resistant entry panels for rental properties. Cheaper panels get damaged and replaced frequently.
What Tenants Need
A system that’s simple to use, works reliably, and doesn’t require them to be home to receive deliveries or let in visitors.
- ✓Smartphone app — answer the door from anywhere. No need to be home to let in a delivery driver or maintenance person.
- ✓Simple operation — one tap to answer, one tap to open the door. No complicated setup or configuration required.
- ✓Multiple users — both housemates can have the app. All receive the call simultaneously and either can open the door.
- ✓No physical key dependency — temporary PIN codes for guests and tradespeople without giving out a physical key.
Common Home Intercom Faults We Fix
Most intercom failures in Melbourne homes fall into predictable categories. Here’s what we see most often — and how we fix it permanently, not just patch the symptom.
No Audio / One-Way Audio
Resident can hear the visitor but visitor can’t hear the resident — or vice versa. Usually a failed handset microphone, corroded wiring, or a faulty entry panel speaker.
Door Release Not Working
Resident presses the door release button but the door doesn’t open. Could be a failed electric strike, a wiring fault, or a power supply issue. We test the full release circuit.
Blank or Flickering Video
Indoor monitor shows no image or a flickering feed. Common causes: failed camera module, damaged video cable, or faulty monitor power supply.
Handset Not Ringing
Visitor presses the entry panel but nothing rings inside. Often caused by a failed entry panel PCB, a broken call button, or a wiring fault in the cable run.
App Not Receiving Calls
Smartphone doesn’t ring when a visitor presses the panel. Usually a SIP registration failure, changed IP address, or push notification permission issue on the phone.
Intermittent / Random Faults
System works sometimes but fails unpredictably. Often caused by a failing power supply, a loose connection, or a corroded terminal block. We perform a full cable and termination audit.
Repair vs Replace — When to Fix and When to Upgrade
Knowing when to repair and when to replace is one of the most valuable things we can tell a homeowner. Here’s the decision framework we use after every fault diagnosis.
Repair When: System is under 10 years old
Parts are still available, the fault is isolated to a single component, and the rest of the system is in good condition.
Repair When: Single component failure
A failed handset, monitor, electric strike, or power supply — replacing one component is almost always cheaper than a full system replacement.
Repair When: Cabling is in good condition
If cable testing shows good continuity and insulation, the existing infrastructure is worth preserving. A new panel on good cable is a cost-effective upgrade.
Replace When: System is over 15 years old
Parts are no longer available, multiple components are failing simultaneously, or the system lacks features the home now needs (video, app access).
Replace When: Repair cost exceeds 50% of new system
A new system comes with a full warranty, modern features, and a known lifespan — making it better value than investing in an ageing platform.
Replace When: Cabling is degraded
If cable testing reveals insulation breakdown or multiple open circuits, a full rewire with new Cat6 cable gives you a solid foundation for any future system upgrades.
Our Honest Assessment
We never recommend replacement without first assessing whether repair is viable. Our site assessment includes a full condition report on all components, with a clear recommendation and cost comparison.
