Uniview vs HiLook CCTV systems comparison

Uniview vs HiLook: Which CCTV System Offers Better Value for a Small Business?

Uniview vs HiLook is a decision about the system your business needs now and what it may need later. For a modest shop with straightforward recording and phone access, HiLook deserves a place on the shortlist. Where the brief includes varied camera types, a difficult yard or substantial recording growth, investigate Uniview’s broader portfolio early.

Those are starting points, not a verdict on every camera. A well-chosen HiLook model can meet a requirement that an entry-level Uniview model cannot, and the reverse is also true. Compare two complete designs against the same coverage and retention brief.

What the two ranges actually offer

HiLook is Hikvision’s value-oriented brand. The current Australian HiLook range includes network cameras and NVRs, plus Turbo HD analogue cameras and DVRs. Selected models offer ColorVu, Smart Hybrid Light, human/vehicle filtering and Live Guard. Treating HiLook as infrared-only or home-only would miss these options.

Uniview offers entry and professional IP camera families, compact and larger NVRs, and specialist cameras. Its 2026 product guide includes Wise-ISP imaging, Tri-Guard deterrence and different analytics capabilities across selected products. These are options to specify, not features included in every UNV quote.

SIPKO supplies and installs Uniview cameras and NVRs, including cabling, storage planning and app setup. HiLook appears in SIPKO’s wired CCTV offering and has a dedicated HiLook camera and recorder service. Confirm the proposed Australian models and availability when requesting either system.

Which system fits your business?

Consider HiLook first for a contained shop or office installation with ordinary fixed-camera views, local recording and straightforward remote access. Ask whether its current models meet each night-view and alert requirement.

Consider Uniview first when the plan needs varied lenses or specialist cameras, more substantial storage, or a defined commercial growth path. Specify the relevant camera and recorder family.

Compare both carefully when the initial budget is tight but expansion is likely. A slightly different recorder or cable plan now may avoid replacing major equipment later; obtain itemised designs before judging value.

Where the specification affects daily use

Night footage needs a scene test

Ask for moving people at the required distance, with the lighting your premises actually have. A bright still image does not establish useful identification footage. Lens choice, shutter speed, sensor, mounting height and backlight handling matter alongside resolution.

Uniview LightHunter or Wise-ISP options and HiLook ColorVu or hybrid-light options should be assessed against that same test. Check whether colour depends on visible supplemental lighting, whether it affects neighbours, and what happens when a person moves quickly. Neither brand has a universal night-quality advantage.

Recorder capacity is more than camera count

For a concrete example, Hikvision’s Australian HiLook brochure lists the NVR-108MH-K/8P with eight channels, 80 Mbps incoming bandwidth and one drive bay. It also lists a 32-channel, two-bay model. HiLook therefore should not be described as stopping at eight or sixteen cameras.

The Uniview NVR504-B-P series includes a 32-channel variant with 320 Mbps incoming bandwidth, four drive bays and sixteen PoE ports. That is a different capacity class, not evidence that every Uniview recorder outperforms HiLook. More channels than PoE ports also means planning external switching.

Calculate retention from actual bitrates, recording schedules and usable disk capacity. Check playback/decoding limits separately from incoming bandwidth, and confirm whether enabling recorder analytics changes available capacity. Test that staff can export a useful clip before handover.

Apps and alerts need a handover test

Uniview identifies UNV-Link as its end-user app; its migration announcement says EZView service is expected to stop in 2027. Confirm the current migration advice for existing equipment. For HiLook, confirm the supported app against the Australian recorder and firmware rather than assuming every Hikvision app feature applies.

Test live view, playback, notifications and user permissions on the owner’s phone. A working local NVR can continue recording during an internet outage if cameras, storage, power and the local network remain operational; offsite viewing normally needs internet connectivity. Camera alerts also need someone assigned to respond.

Strengths and checks before choosing

Uniview

Particularly strong when: the brief benefits from different camera families, multi-drive recording or specialist views.

Things to check: which analytics run in the camera or NVR, compatible event search, local stock, software requirements and the actual storage design. Entry models do not inherit professional-range capabilities.

HiLook

Particularly strong when: a clearly defined wired system meets the job without unnecessary complexity.

Things to check: exact night-lighting and deterrence features, recorder limits and app support. Mainline Hikvision specifications are not a substitute for the HiLook datasheet.

Seven small-business scenarios

1. Small retail shop: four to eight cameras

Start with HiLook for entrance, till, stockroom and rear-door coverage with ordinary incident review. Its current IP range can suit this contained brief. Compare a Uniview design if a particular view needs a different lens or stronger recording provision. Check till detail, shopfront backlight, phone playback and retention. SIPKO’s retail CCTV planning starts with these locations rather than a fixed kit.

2. Office: clear entries and controlled access

Start with HiLook for a single office covering entry, reception and appropriate common areas. Keep mobile viewing and after-hours review simple. Consider Uniview if the plan includes multiple buildings or more involved video management. Check individual permissions, cleaner access times, notification schedules and export access. Cameras do not replace door access control or intrusion detection.

3. Café or restaurant: changing light

Compare both using the proposed night camera, rather than selecting a brand first. Entrances, till and back-of-house areas may be straightforward; a dark rear lane can change the specification. Start with HiLook if its selected hybrid-light or ColorVu model meets the brief, or investigate Uniview’s low-light options for a difficult view. Check glare, moving detail, steam/grease exposure, cleaning access and after-hours light use.

4. Medical or professional clinic

Start with HiLook for a modest entry and common-area system with uncomplicated administration. Uniview becomes a useful alternative where recording or management requirements extend further. Establish appropriate coverage before choosing hardware: avoid treatment rooms, screens and unnecessary audio capture. Check restricted viewing permissions, retention and who can export footage. Obtain suitable privacy advice where needed; a camera brand does not establish compliance.

5. Small warehouse or trade unit

Start with Uniview when roller doors, aisles, loading areas and a yard need different lenses, night modes or longer retention. Its broader camera and recorder families provide more options to investigate. HiLook remains a contender for a compact, well-lit unit. Check identification distances, headlight glare, mounting heights and drive capacity. A warehouse CCTV layout should follow goods and vehicle movement.

6. Existing system upgrade

Start with the installed infrastructure. HiLook’s analogue/DVR options merit assessment where serviceable coax is retained; Uniview is a natural IP shortlist where its camera or recording options suit the redesign. Neither guarantees reuse. Test cable condition, power, PoE budget, recorder compatibility, event handling and mixed-camera playback. Plan the changeover so a recorder swap does not create an unnoticed recording gap.

7. Small site likely to expand

Start with Uniview for a varied future brief, particularly where specialist cameras or more drive bays are anticipated. Keep HiLook in consideration if growth remains within a suitable larger NVR’s capabilities. Specify today’s and tomorrow’s camera counts, aggregate bitrate, disk space, switch capacity, analytics limits and user administration. Spare channels alone do not establish expansion capacity.

What better value means on the quote

Ask for the same coverage, night-detail target and retention period in both designs. Compare named camera/lens models, NVR, drives, cabling, switches, PoE provision, labour, access equipment, network work and commissioning. Identify any monitoring, cloud or support charges separately.

A lower hardware subtotal can lose its advantage if the recorder needs early replacement or an important entrance needs another camera. Equally, unused analytics and oversized equipment add little value. Include cleaning, disk-health checks, firmware maintenance and future support in the discussion without assuming a particular lifespan.

Both brands have Australian supply channels. Confirm current model availability, firmware support, warranty exclusions, labour coverage and who handles a failed recorder. Do not treat catalogue presence as a stock guarantee or infer one brand’s reliability from marketing language.

What should you ask your installer?

  • How many cameras are needed now, and where might we expand?
  • Which views need identification detail, and at what distance?
  • What lighting remains on after closing?
  • How many recording days will the quoted drives provide?
  • Which analytics or deterrence rules solve a real problem here?
  • Can existing cabling and PoE equipment be tested and reused?
  • What are the recorder’s channel, bandwidth, playback and storage limits?
  • Which app and users need access, and who owns account recovery?
  • What keeps recording if internet access fails?
  • Which equipment warranty, installation support and maintenance terms apply?

FAQ

Is Uniview better than HiLook for a small business?

Uniview offers more paths for varied camera and recording requirements. HiLook may meet a contained shop or office brief fully. Choose the design that delivers the required footage, retention and daily operation at an acceptable installed cost.

Is HiLook the same as Hikvision?

HiLook is a Hikvision brand with its own product range and value positioning. It is not interchangeable with every mainline Hikvision camera, recorder or software feature. Check the complete model number.

Which gives better night footage?

Compare the proposed cameras in comparable lighting with moving subjects. Both have low-light options, but lens, sensor, illumination and settings determine whether the view supplies useful detail. A brand-wide winner would be misleading.

Which system is better for future expansion?

Uniview warrants an early look for specialist cameras and larger recording needs. A suitable HiLook NVR may cover predictable growth. Check bandwidth, storage, PoE and management requirements as well as spare channels.

Can I reuse my existing cameras and cabling?

Possibly, after testing. Cable type and condition, power, supported protocols, firmware and recorder features all matter. Basic video compatibility does not guarantee analytics, audio, alerts or complete playback support.

Choose the system around your premises

Ask SIPKO to assess camera count, coverage, night conditions, storage, cabling, expansion plans and budget for your Melbourne business. A scoped CCTV installation assessment gives you a useful basis for comparing Uniview and HiLook on the same requirements.
