CCTV for a single apartment or an entire building

A camera inside one unit serves a different purpose from a system used by a building manager. Start with the areas you need to see and who will review the footage.

Individual apartments

Security cameras for an individual apartment

For a single unit, we can assess indoor camera locations, power and Wi-Fi coverage, and whether local recording or app viewing suits the space. If you want to cover an entry or install equipment outside your unit, confirm the proposed location and permissions with your building manager before booking.

  • Indoor cameras and selected entry views where suitable
  • Wired or Wi-Fi options, depending on the site
  • Recording and app access for authorised users
Shared areas

Apartment building CCTV for common areas

For owners corporations and strata managers, we plan CCTV for apartment building common areas, including agreed views of lobbies, lifts and lift approaches, basement car parks, garage entries, parcel areas and pedestrian gates. We review lighting, mounting points and cable routes before recommending equipment.

  • Camera placement for agreed shared areas
  • Central recording and footage export where specified
  • Separate viewing and management access where supported

Where to install CCTV in an apartment building

Start with the incidents you need to review. A wide view of a whole car park can show where a vehicle went, while a closer view of the entry lane may be needed to make out useful details. For each camera, agree what the recording needs to show before deciding where to mount it. Our CCTV camera placement guide explains how angle, mounting height and lighting affect the view.

Lobby and building entranceCover people entering or leaving through the main doors. Check the view at the brightest time of day, as daylight through glass can make faces difficult to see from inside.
Basement car park and garage rampReview vehicle routes, pedestrian exits and the gate approach. Headlights, concrete columns and low ceilings affect camera angles. If readable plates are needed, discuss a dedicated view and test it under the site’s lighting.
Parcel and mail areasFrame the delivery or collection area without unnecessarily capturing readable address labels or activity outside the agreed zone. Check whether open doors, shelves or temporary parcel piles could block the view.
Lift lobbies and shared corridorsWhere included in the approved scope, cover the approach to lifts, stairwells or shared doors. Check whether private doorways fall into the frame and adjust the angle or use privacy masking where supported.
Bike rooms and storage entrancesConsider both the doorway and the area around the racks or lockers. A camera that only sees the door may miss what happened once someone entered the room.

What we check before recommending cameras

Camera views and lighting

A camera over a garage ramp and a camera beside a parcel shelf do different jobs. We check distance, lighting and likely obstructions before choosing a mounting position and lens.

Cabling and recording

We assess existing cable routes, network access and space for the recorder. For an upgrade, we check which cameras, cables and recording equipment can be kept before including replacements in the quote.

Footage access and handover

Agree who can view, review or export recordings before installation. During handover, we show the nominated users how to find a recording and export it on the installed system.

Wired, Wi-Fi or an upgrade to the existing CCTV system?

Wired IP cameras and an NVR

A wired IP system is worth considering when several shared areas need central recording. Power over Ethernet can carry power and video over the same cable. We check routes through ceiling spaces or risers, switch capacity and a suitable location for the network video recorder before specifying the equipment.

Wi-Fi cameras for a single unit

Wi-Fi can be an option when a camera is close to reliable wireless coverage and a suitable power point. Concrete walls and a weak signal at the actual mounting position can change the recommendation. Check where clips are stored and whether the model needs a subscription for the features you want.

Replacing cameras or a recorder

If you have missing footage, blurred night images or a recorder no one can access, diagnose the issue first. We can check whether cable runs and usable cameras can stay, and whether the existing recorder supports the proposed cameras and recording settings.

From the first enquiry to handover

Phase 1

Tell us what needs coverage

  • Send the suburb, whether it is a single apartment or a managed building, and the areas you want covered. For upgrades, include any known camera or recorder models.
Phase 2

Confirm the scope and quote

  • We assess camera positions, access and recording needs. The quote sets out the proposed equipment, installation work and any site requirements to arrange before work begins.
Phase 3

Install, test and hand over

  • We check camera views, recording and playback, then walk the nominated person through access and footage export where included in the scope.

What to agree before CCTV work begins

Before installation

  • Confirm the shared areas and the purpose of each camera view.
  • Nominate the person who can provide access to risers, ceilings, car park gates and communications rooms.
  • Agree who manages the recording equipment, which users need footage access and how to handle areas outside the intended view.

At handover

  • Review the actual camera views and check recorded playback, date and time.
  • Ask the nominated user to find and export a sample clip.
  • Record who controls the administrator account and how access will be transferred if the building manager changes.
Site assessment and quote

What affects apartment CCTV installation cost?

Apartment CCTV installation from AUD 6,400. The number of cameras is only one part of the quote. A small block with usable cabling can have a simpler installation than a building with separate basement levels, restricted access or long cable runs.

Coverage and camera specification:number of views, lens requirements and performance in low light or at bright entrances.
Labour and access:cable routes, mounting height, accessible ceiling space and any work that needs to be scheduled around residents or vehicle access.
Recording and viewing:recorder capacity, storage, network equipment and any agreed remote access setup.
Equipment you can keep:existing cabling, cameras, mounts or a recorder that can support the revised scope.

Apartment CCTV installation questions

Quick answers on installation costs, existing cameras, recording and remote access for Melbourne apartments and shared areas.

How much does apartment CCTV installation cost in Melbourne?
Apartment CCTV installation starts from AUD 6,400. The quote depends on camera count, cable access, mounting conditions, the recording setup and whether existing equipment can be reused. Tell us which areas need coverage so we can scope the work for your property.
Can you upgrade an existing apartment building CCTV system?
Yes. We can assess the current cameras, cabling and recorder, check compatibility and explain what can be retained. Where the existing system cannot support the required coverage or playback, we can quote the relevant replacements.
What should I confirm before asking for a camera near my front door?
Ask the building manager or owners corporation about the intended mounting point, cable path and field of view, especially if the camera would capture a corridor, a neighbouring doorway or another shared area. For a rental, discuss any fixed installation with the property manager first.
Will a building CCTV system record if the internet goes down?
A system with a local recorder can continue recording while the cameras, recorder and local network remain powered and connected. Remote viewing can stop during an internet outage. Confirm how the proposed system handles each type of outage if recording continuity matters to the building.
Can we start with the lobby and car park and add cameras later?
Yes, if the system is planned for expansion. Agree the first areas to cover, then allow capacity in the recorder, network switches and cable routes for the cameras you may add later.
How can we prepare for a site assessment?
Share a floor plan or marked-up photos if available, the areas that need coverage and any details about the existing system. Arrange access with the building representative so the installer can inspect shared spaces and possible cable routes.
Can a building manager view or export footage remotely?
Remote viewing depends on the recorder, network and agreed access settings. We can discuss how nominated users will review recordings, which roles need export access and what happens if the building changes internet provider or manager.
