Aiphone vs Akuvox: Which Intercom System Makes More Sense for Your Property?

Aiphone vs Akuvox should start with who answers the door and who manages access. A Melbourne home may need one gate call answered from the kitchen. An apartment building may need concierge screening, resident changes and several entrances.

Start with Aiphone for a design centred on dedicated indoor, reception or guard stations. Compare Akuvox closely when verified SIP calling and cloud resident administration are priorities. Both have mobile and apartment options. Compare the proposed call flow and management arrangements, not just the entrance panel.

How this fits SIPKO’s Melbourne work

SIPKO installs both Aiphone intercoms and Akuvox intercoms in Melbourne. The assessment should cover door hardware, cabling, commissioning and user handover as well as the intercom equipment.

Which system fits your project?

  • Consider Aiphone first: a straightforward indoor answering point, purpose-built reception workflow, or a compatible Aiphone apartment upgrade.
  • Consider Akuvox first: a project centred on cloud-managed residents, selected digital credentials or a verified SIP phone workflow.
  • Compare both carefully: an older building, mixed-use site, or any project where internet failure must not interrupt essential local entry functions.

These are starting points for specification, not blanket brand rankings.

Compare the relevant product families

Aiphone: choose the family before the features

JO is a residential video intercom range with two-conductor door wiring. Mobile answering requires the appropriate JO-1MDW Wi-Fi master and internet connection; a JO label alone does not promise an app. JV is another current residential option, but Aiphone Australia currently states it has no mobile-app capability and is not cross-compatible with JO.

IX Series 2 provides IP/PoE door, master and assistance-station workflows for commercial sites. Selected equipment supports ONVIF video integration. GT serves multi-tenant entry, with concierge and multi-building configurations. IXG adds a full-IP apartment architecture with tenant and guard stations, mobile options and documented lift interfaces.

IXG also offers resident messaging, multi-property app use and documented IP-PBX options. Mobile and management features are not exclusive to Akuvox. Specify the Aiphone family first. JO and JV are not cross-compatible; documented IX/IXG integrations need a designed configuration rather than arbitrary component swaps.

Akuvox: decide how the system will be managed

Akuvox combines IP door phones and indoor monitors with local/SIP calling and the SmartPlus cloud platform. A compact home entrance station and a large apartment directory panel serve different needs; select the device around the entrance and answering arrangement.

SmartPlus supports resident and property-management workflows, while matched two-wire IP kits provide retrofit options. The proposed station, firmware, project type and service package determine what is available. Confirm Australian supply, warranty handling and the local support contact in the quote.

Local operation, mobile answering and cloud services

Separate three functions: answering at an indoor station, using an entry credential, and answering remotely on a phone. They can have different dependencies within the same installation.

A wired JO/JV installation can answer locally without an internet service. IX local calling needs its network and power. IXG mobile answering adds gateway and external-service dependencies, so loss of app calling does not necessarily mean the local stations have stopped working.

Akuvox documents direct-IP calling on a local network and SIP-server configurations. SmartPlus remote services are a different path. A cloud outage need not disable a correctly designed local call path, but a cloud-only answering arrangement needs its cloud connection.

Ask for an outage demonstration covering local calls, credentials and door release. Confirm backup power for the stations, switches and locks. For both brands, obtain written mobile-account entitlements, licensing and renewal terms. Akuvox’s service documentation distinguishes project types, included accounts and paid additions; neither “everything is free” nor “every function needs a subscription” is a safe assumption.

Seven property scenarios

1. Home or front gate

Aiphone JO/JV is a natural starting point when the household wants a fixed monitor and straightforward gate answering. If mobile answering matters, specify a supported JO arrangement rather than assuming JV includes it. Compare an Akuvox monitor/door-phone kit when app use or selected credentials matter more. Check gate distance, exposure and lock control before choosing.

2. Office or reception

Aiphone IX suits a dedicated reception desk handling several door stations. Akuvox is worth comparing when calls must fit an existing SIP environment. Test the actual phone, video, transfer and unlock sequence; SIP support alone does not prove compatibility. For office security, agree who answers when reception is unattended.

3. Small apartment building

A compatible GT proposal may suit residents who prefer fixed indoor stations and a familiar entry process. Akuvox merits a closer look where the manager wants cloud resident administration and phone answering. An apartment intercom assessment should cover residents without smartphones, unit access for installation and responsibility for account changes.

4. Larger multi-tenant building

Aiphone IXG is relevant where tenant stations, a guard desk and controlled call transfers anchor the design. Akuvox SmartPlus is worth assessing where ongoing resident administration is central. Specify concierge handling, building boundaries, simultaneous calls and lift permissions. Obtain a capacity calculation and interface approval; a headline user count is not a complete building design.

5. Existing-building retrofit

Start with a cable survey. Aiphone’s family-specific wiring options and Akuvox’s matched two-wire kits both deserve consideration. The natural fit is the system that passes the actual cable, distance, power and topology checks while meeting the brief. Reusing cable does not mean retaining incompatible stations. Plan unit access, temporary entry arrangements and staged commissioning.

6. New build

Aiphone IX/IXG and suitable Akuvox IP equipment can both form structured-network designs. Prefer Aiphone where dedicated station workflows lead; compare Akuvox where cloud administration and chosen credentials lead. Allow for PoE budgets, network segregation, risers and spare capacity early. Check whether a device needs PoE or PoE+, and document future door and tenancy expansion.

7. Commercial or mixed-use property

Aiphone IX/IXG warrants consideration when reception, tenants and guard operations must work together. Akuvox warrants consideration where different managers administer residents, staff and visitor access. Neither removes the need to separate residential and commercial permissions. SIPKO’s strata security approach includes common-area access and accountability: map parking, deliveries and after-hours calls before specifying hardware.

Access control and video: check the actual equipment

A door-release relay opens a nominated circuit; it is not a complete enterprise access-control platform. Aiphone’s current IXG documentation includes PIN/QR entry and a reader-equipped entrance variant. Akuvox’s credential matrix shows exactly which models support cards, PINs, QR codes, Bluetooth or facial recognition. These features are not universal.

For an existing access system, verify reader format, controller interface, firmware, permissions and event reporting. Mobile answering does not automatically include a mobile credential. Demonstrate how users are added and revoked and how entry behaves when an external service is unavailable.

Assess video at the entrance: mounting height, backlighting, night illumination and the visitor’s position matter alongside resolution. Request a demonstration rather than assuming either brand always delivers better pictures or audio.

Strengths and limitations to weigh

Aiphone

Particularly strong when: the design revolves around dedicated door, indoor, reception or guard stations with defined call handling.

Things to check: family compatibility, mobile-capable hardware, gateways and integration limits. A residential kit cannot inherit IXG features merely because both carry the Aiphone name.

Akuvox

Particularly strong when: cloud resident management, a verified SIP workflow or selected credential options are central.

Things to check: firmware, service package, ongoing account administration and interoperability. More available functions mean more configuration decisions; include handover and support in the scope.

Keep network and account responsibilities clear

For either IP system, separate intercom traffic from guest networks where appropriate, use unique administrator passwords and plan supported firmware updates. Restrict remote administration and unnecessary public SIP exposure. Enable MFA where available, and document owner, manager and installer access.

The owner or owners corporation should receive account recovery arrangements, configuration records and a process for removing departed users. If facial recognition is proposed, separately assess data handling, consent requirements and a suitable alternative credential.

What should you ask before choosing?

  • How many entrances, dwellings, staff and simultaneous calls must the system support?
  • Which cables, stations and door hardware can actually be retained?
  • Who answers normally, after hours and during an internet outage?
  • Are indoor stations, mobile answering, concierge and lift interfaces all included?
  • Which credentials and third-party integrations have been verified?
  • Who controls the accounts, renewals, updates and resident changes?
  • What changes if the building expands, and who provides local support?

Compare complete installed scopes. Costs depend on stations, cabling, switches, power supplies, locks, integrations, labour, commissioning and mobile/cloud services. Request initial and recurring costs separately. A cheaper entrance panel does not establish a cheaper finished project.

FAQ

Is Aiphone better than Akuvox?

Aiphone is a strong starting point for dedicated reception and indoor-station workflows. Akuvox is a strong starting point for cloud resident administration and verified SIP calling. Ask each proposal to demonstrate your actual visitor, resident and after-hours routines.

Which should an apartment building consider?

Compare a suitable Aiphone GT/IXG design with a suitable Akuvox multi-tenant proposal. Existing wiring, concierge needs, resident administration and local answering requirements should drive the shortlist.

Do both brands support mobile answering?

Yes, on supported configurations. Aiphone JO requires the appropriate Wi-Fi master, while other ranges use different arrangements; JV currently has no app support. Akuvox SmartPlus requires compatible equipment and the relevant service setup.

Will the intercom work if the internet fails?

Local wired or IP calling can be independent of internet service, but still needs functioning equipment, network paths and power. Remote app services have additional dependencies. Have the installer demonstrate the proposed outage behaviour.

Can we reuse our old intercom cables?

Reuse is possible when the existing cable type, condition, length and layout meet the selected system’s requirements. Ask for a cable survey and a list of components that must be replaced before accepting a retrofit quote.
